YaleConnect
By the end of January 2013, central ITS plans to decommission the Horde/Pantheon email servers. As a result, all YLS student accounts will move to a new system before the start of the Fall semester. In consultation with the Student Reps we have opted to provision new accounts for YLS students on the same email/calendaring system used by YLS faculty and staff, YaleConnect.
Two Options for account creation/migration:
1. OPT-IN between May 1st and August 1st by scheduling an appointment with Marcin Kloc (law.help@yale.edu) or
2. Automatic creation of YaleConnect account at 11:59 PM on Tuesday August 21st and all mail to firstname.lastname@yale.edu directed to YaleConnect immediately.
What changes should I expect?
·Your email address will not change
·The URL for web access changes to https://connect.yale.edu/
·If you forward your Pantheon account to Gmail you will need to set up forwarding on YaleConnect.
·If you check your Pantheon account using the Gmail POP settings you will need to re-configure for your YaleConnect account.
·Smartphones and other mobile devices will need to be configured for YaleConnect.
Improvements:
·Outlook Web Access (https://connect.yale.edu/): More responsive web-based email and calendaring with options like conversation view and free/busy search. For more information go to: http://www.yale.edu/its/connect/2010/new-webmail.html
·Active Sync for mobile devices: Easy to setup syncing of Messages, Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks in real time via cellular data or wireless on most smartphone and tablets.
·Enhanced Search: Enhanced search capabilities across email, calendar, contacts, and tasks.
·Cross-browser compatibility – full functionality on Macs using Firefox or Safari.
·Quota: Increased overall mailbox storage for messages from 2GB to 8GB.
How to OPT-IN:
·Before August 1st send an email to law.help@yale.edu requesting an account on YaleConnect. Please include your Yale NetID and class year.
·We will contact you to schedule an appointment for your account creation and migration.
How long will it take create my YaleConnect account?
·If you are forwarding your Horde/Pantheon account to Gmail and do not need to transfer messages from Pantheon to YaleConnect the complete migration will take less than 30 minutes from start to finish.
·If you have mail on Horde/Pantheon that you want to transfer to YaleConnect, your migration will be a two-step process.
-
Your YaleConnect account will be created and all new mail will be delivered to YaleConnect.
-
Your Horde/Pantheon account will remain available until October 1st and you can work with Marcin Kloc and the email migration tool to move your messages from Pantheon to YaleConnect.
What happens on August 21st if I don’t opt in?
Just before midnight an automated process will create your account on YaleConnect. Any mail that arrives during the account transfer process will be delivered to your YaleConnect account. Shortly after midnight you will use YaleConnect to read all incoming mail. If you want to forward to Gmail you will need to setup forwarding via https://connect.yale.edu/.
What’s the difference between the old Pantheon/Horde email and the new YaleConnect email?
The Pantheon/Horde is a Unix based, send-mail system with limited features and diminishing reliability. YaleConnect is built on Microsoft Exchange technology and has a richer feature set – for example integrated contacts, calendar, and meeting scheduling. YaleConnect has been in use at Yale for about five years now and was upgraded in January to version 2010. YLS faculty, staff and clinic students have been using YaleConnect for a number of years. Moving all YLS student accounts to YaleConnect will allow the law school community to use a single email system with shared contacts, email-distribution groups, calendaring and meeting scheduling.
How do I start using the new email system?
Via a web browser go to: https://connect.yale.edu (login with your email address and NetID password)
On an email client (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird):Reconfigure the account setup for YaleConnect.
What will happen to my stored messages in the old Pantheon/Horde system?
If you do not migrate your messages to YaleConnect or Gmail they will be deleted on October 1st 2012 when your Pantheon account is deleted from the mail servers.
I forward my Pantheon/Horde email to another email account (example Gmail). Will my email automatically continue to forward after my YaleConnect account is active?
No, your email will not continue to forward. After your YaleConnect account is active – redirecting must be setup on YaleConnect. If you configured Gmail to pull messages from your Yale account you must disable it through Gmail first, then follow the instructions for reconfiguring redirection of email. For instructions on setting up forwarding, click here.
What happens to all the old Pantheon/Horde messages that forwarded to Gmail – will I lose them when my account changes?
No, any messages that were previously forwarded to your outside email account will not be affected, however, to continue receiving forwarded Yale messages you need to configure YaleConnect for redirecting. Get instructions here.
I want to receive and send Yale email from my iPhone, Android, or Blackberry. How do I set this up?
For an iPhone, click here.
For a Blackberry, click here.
If you need assistance with this setup please contact Marcin Kloc, or the YLS IT Services help desk at (203)432-0821 during business hours.
I have an Exchange (YaleConnect) account for the clinic I participate in, will it change?
No, your clinic exchange account will not be affected. As before, you will maintain two separate email accounts but now both accounts (Yale and Clinic) will be hosted at YaleConnect.
I’m a JD/MBA student and already have exchange from Yale SOM. How will I be affected?
You will continue to use the YaleConnect account that SOM created for you.
Call me crazy but I like the Pantheon/Horde email. Do I have to move to the new system if I don’t want to?
Unfortunately, the Pantheon/Horde email system will be discontinued University-wide. Remaining on the Pantheon/Horde system is not an option.
What email programs can I use with YaleConnect?
For Windows users: Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, and Thunderbird (limited features, no calendaring or address list)
For Apple Users: Apple Mail and Calendar (Snow Leopard or later), Outlook 2011, Thunderbird (limited features, no calendaring or address list)
Note--Most modern web browsers support access to https://connect.yale.edu which does not require the installation of an email program and can be accessed securely from public computers.
