The Coordinating Council for Children in Crisis (CCCC) works to prevent domestic abuse, neglect, and victimization by providing home visiting and outreach, parenting education, family strengthening activities, counseling, and advocacy to both children and adults. The legal consultation and representation provided by the Community Lawyering Clinic are an important part of CCCC’s broad efforts to support and strengthen families in need.
Most of CLC’s clients from CCCC are grappling with domestic violence. From divorce and child custody proceedings to special education litigation and defense against eviction, CLC’s legal services provide critical support to CCCC clients as they create a more secure, safe, and stable environment for themselves and their children.
Junta
JUNTA for Progressive Action is the oldest, community-based nonprofit organization in New Haven. Our legal services complement the wide variety of free programs and services Junta already provides that include adult education, youth programs, immigration counseling, employment advocacy, financial development, and political advocacy. In many cases, CLC students work in conjunction with Junta staff to ensure that our clients receive the full benefits of the holistic services available.
Clients are predominantly Latino/a Spanish speakers; many are undocumented. Because of the nature of the client base, students working out of Junta have the opportunity to navigate the difficult intersections of race, national origin, language, gender, and socio-economic status. Students also learn how to work with interpreters to successfully communicate with clients of different languages.
