Yale Law School Seeks Director of Public Interest Programs

Yale Law School has an exciting opportunity for a leader in the area of Public Interest.  As Dean Harold Koh has stated, “A commitment to public service has long been a part of the culture of our School, a culture that believes that every lawyer has a duty to work actively toward a good greater than private gain.  This belief, and the commitment that goes with it, are at the very heart of the Yale Law School’s traditions.”  The appointed Director will play a key role in shaping the direction of public interest programming and support at the Law School.  In addition, the Director will serve as a central resource on, and help coordinate, public interest initiatives and activities throughout the Law School.  The duties also include providing advice to students and alumni who are interested in learning about or pursuing legal positions in the public sector.  This position reports to the Dean of Student Affairs.

The Director will work closely with the Dean, Dean of Student Affairs, faculty, staff, student leaders, alumni, and employers to assess and expand the public interest programs and opportunities provided at the Law School.  He or she will proactively develop services in response to changing student and alumni needs, and collaborate with other programs, departments and centers on public interest initiatives.

Other duties include providing individual career counseling; conducting extensive employer outreach; participating in the fellowship application process; overseeing programs that provide financial support to students in public interest positions; administering pro bono initiatives; collaborating on conferences, projects and publications; and participating in public forums on public interest law and career opportunities.

The Director position requires excellent interpersonal and communications skills; the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of constituencies including students, alumni, faculty, administrators, and legal practitioners; empathy, flexibility and good judgment; and must be able to maintain confidential information.  Excellent organizational, planning, and leadership skills; the ability to design and manage own projects with minimal supervision; the ability to work under pressure, and to balance competing responsibilities, as well as excellent research and writing skills are necessary.

An advanced degree in law and at least five years of practice in a public interest or government legal position, as well as knowledge of public interest and government legal communities is required. Prior experience in law school career counseling or other academic administration is preferred.
