"Darfur: Day of Action," Oct. 16

On Monday, October 16, Yale Law School Students United Against Genocide in Darfur, the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights, the Yale Law School Dean's Office, and Davenport College will sponsor a series of events to focus attention on the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

"Darfur: A Day of Action" will begin with a panel discussion about international responses to the crisis in Darfur at 4:10 p.m. in Room 127, Yale Law School. Panelists will include Francis Deng, Visiting Scholar, Center for International Studies at MIT and a former Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons (1992-2004); Michael Doyle, Visiting Professor of Law at YLS and former Assistant Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan (2001-2003); and John Prendergast, Senior Advisor at the International Crisis Group and former National Security Council Director of African Affairs. Yale Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh, who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor from 1998 to 2001, will serve as panel moderator.

The panelists will describe the state of violence in Darfur and the current peacekeeping efforts in the Sudan, and will discuss potential strategies to reduce the violence.

Following the first panel, a student-organized letter-writing campaign will take place from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Room 122 of the Law School.

The day will close with a panel discussion, “Inside Darfur,” at Davenport College with John Prendergast, Mia Farrow, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and noted actress; and Ronan Farrow, a first-year student at Yale Law School, a Genocide Intervention Network Representative, and a UNICEF Spokesperson for Youth. Professor David Simon, an expert on the Rwandan genocide and a Lecturer in Political Science, will moderate the discussion. The panel will be hosted by Davenport College Master Richard Schottenfeld.
