Stephen L. Carter
William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law
Stephen Carter is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale Law School. He came to Yale as an assistant professor in 1982 after clerking for Judge Spottswood W. Robinson III of the D.C. Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals and for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. Professor Carter’s expertise is in constitutional law, contracts, intellectual property law, secrets and lying, and law and religion. His books include New England White, Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby, God’s Name in Vain, and The Emperor of Ocean Park. Professor Carter has a B.A. from Stanford University and a J.D. from Yale.
