Timeline

Year of Application:

Fall:

  • Applications due.

Spring:

  • Applicant is admitted.
  • Ph.D. Admissions Committee appoints initial Advisory Committee (including primary advisor/chair).
  • Advisory Committee consults with candidate to determine appropriate coursework for the first year.

Year 1:

Fall:

  • Candidate takes pro-seminar and other coursework prescribed by Advisory Committee. Coursework and progress reviewed at the end of the semester.

Spring:

  • Candidate continues pro-seminar and coursework. At the conclusion of the pro-seminar, candidate takes written qualifying examination administered by the pro-seminar instructors.
  • Advisory Committee, in consultation with candidate, develops reading list for the oral qualifying examination.

Summer:

  • Candidate prepares for oral qualifying examination.

Year 2:

Fall - September

  • Candidate takes the oral qualifying examination, administered by the candidate’s Advisory Committee.

Fall - post-exams

  • Candidate consults with Advisory Committee to constitute Dissertation Committee (which frequently, but not always, will be the same as Advisory Committee). Dissertation Committee chair will serve as primary advisor/mentor.
  • Candidate writes dissertation prospectus in consultation with Dissertation Committee. Once Dissertation Committee approves the prospectus (by the end of 3rd semester), the Committee composition and dissertation prospectus must be approved by the Ph.D. Policy Committee.

Spring:

  • Candidate works on dissertation.
  • Candidate may engage in first teaching experience. (Candidates will consult with their Dissertation Committees to determine the two semesters in which they will teach.)

Summer:

  • Candidate works on dissertation.

Year 3:

Fall:

  • Candidate works on dissertation.
  • Candidate goes on the job market for teaching positions the next year.

Spring:

  • Candidate works on dissertation.
  • Candidate may engage in second teaching experience.

Summer:

  • Candidate completes dissertation.
  • Once approved by Dissertation Committee, the dissertation is submitted to the Ph.D. Committee for final approval.
