Esther Vicente

Esther Vicente is an Associate Law Professor at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Law, where she teaches courses on the International Protection of Human Rights, Feminist Jurisprudence, Family Law, Property Law, and Administrative Law. She has been a full-time member of the Inter American University Law Faculty since 1999.

In May 2002 she obtained a Ph.D. in Law from the University of London, U.K., and in 1991 was granted a Masters Degree in Law by the London School of Economics and Political Science. She earned her J.D. from the School of Law of the University of Puerto Rico.

Professor Vicente has co-authored the book Abortion in Puerto Rico and has published articles and works in professional reviews and chapters in several books on feminist perspectives in legal theory, reproductive rights, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and human rights.

She has more than thirty years of experience in the legal profession. Most of her professional work has been dedicated to the development and defense of women’s rights through litigation and the promotion of legislation. She played a leading role both as a legal scholar and as an activist in garnering the approval of the Domestic Violence Prevention and Intervention Act of Puerto Rico and the Act against Sexual Harassment in the Workplace.

Through her participation in several regional and international organizations, such as the Latin American and Caribbean Committee for the Defense of Women’s Rights and the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Professor Vicente has been able to share her experience and knowledge on political and legal processes with women from around the world.

Professor Vicente is a member of the Governing Council of the International Planned Parenthood Federation with central offices in London and is President of the Western Hemisphere Region of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
