In addition to providing research assistance and instruction to our faculty and students, we collect foreign law (the law of countries other than the United States of America), comparative law (the comparison of law of different jurisdictions), transnational law (law of multi-country organizations, for purposes of this website -- European Union, African Union, etc.) and international law (the law between and among countries -- treaties, agreements, international court decisions, commentary, etc.).

We have a world-renowned international human rights collection, extensive European collections, and quickly-expanding Latin American and Asian collections. We are available to assist you in the F/I office on L1, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm.

These courses are designed and offered by library staff and have a foreign, international, and/or transnational focus:

Contemporary Legal Issues in Africa - Fall 2009 (1 unit, credit/fail)

This reading group will meet once a week at lunchtime to discuss current events in Africa, with special emphasis on events that raise issues of international law. Each student will be given responsibility for a particular region of Africa and will report weekly on the important events in that region. One unit of credit is available for participants. Students who wish to do more extensive research into the legal issues in their particular region can make special arrangements for additional study, including the awarding of Supervised Analytic Writing credit. It is possible to take this course more than once. No previous background is assumed, only a general interest in increasing awareness of what is currently going on in Africa. L. Brilmayer and D. Wade.

Research Methods in Foreign and International Law - Spring 2010 (1 unit, 7 weeks, credit/fail)

Explore the major sources of international law, the law of some of the largest inter-governmental organizations, and general methods for finding laws from nations other than the United States. Both print and online sources will be examined. Although several area perspectives will be included, much of the course will be taught from an American perspective and we will concentrate on sources widely available in the United States. Assuming sufficient interest, particular research interests of the class may also be explored. A series of short assignments will be required. This course will meet for two hours per week in the first half of the term. No prerequisites. Minimum enrollment of two required.

Advanced Legal Research - Fall 2009, Spring 2010 (3 units, graded)

Class sessions will integrate the use of online, print, and other research sources. Notebook computer recommended. Research problems and paper required.
