THIS WEEKEND -- Alumni Weekend 2011: Human Rights in a Turbulent World

Yale Law School will put out the welcome mat once again this fall for alumni, students, faculty, and guests gathering for Alumni Weekend festivities November 4-6 in New Haven. All alums, whether celebrating a reunion this year or not, are invited to attend “Alumni Weekend 2011: Human Rights in a Turbulent World.”

An outstanding lineup of alumni, faculty, and other experts will take part in a variety of panel discussions on the subject of human rights. Topics include “Emerging Challenges to the Freedom of Expression: From Hate Speech to Social Networks”; “Reporting on Human Rights: The Responsibility of Journalists and NGOs?”; and “Navigating the Tension Between National Security and Human Rights.” In a panel discussion Friday afternoon, current Yale Law School students will talk about the human rights work they are doing through various fellowships and clinics, including the Allard K. Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic. And on Saturday afternoon, former Yale Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh, now legal adviser to the U.S. State Department, will give a talk titled “International Law and U.S. Foreign Policy: The View from Foggy Bottom.”

Other highlights of the weekend include Friday night’s All Alumni reception and dinner and Saturday’s presentation of the Yale Law School Award of Merit to Luzius Wildhaber ’65 LLM, ’68 JSD, former judge and president of the European Court of Human Rights. A Student Activity Fair on Friday afternoon will give alumni the chance to learn about and connect with current student groups, and a Student-Alumni Breakfast on Saturday morning matches alumni with current students to chat about common interests.

Detailed information about the weekend’s activities, along with online registration, lodging information, and a complete schedule of events, will be available on the Alumni Weekend website.
