Norm Ornstein to give Dean's Lecture on "Election 2004," Oct. 20

Norman J. Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute will speak about "Election 2004" on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at 7:00 p.m., in Room 127. Donald Green of the Yale Political Science Department will then comment on Ornstein's talk. The Dean's Lecture is free and open to the public.

Norm Ornstein is a nationally known expert on politics and elections. He is a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. He also serves as an election analyst for CBS News. In addition, Ornstein writes for USA Today as a member of its Board of Contributors and writes a weekly column called "Congress Inside Out" for Roll Call newspaper. He has written for the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs and other major publications, and frequently appears on television programs like The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Nightline, and Charlie Rose. His many books include The Permanent Campaign and Its Future; Intensive Care: How Congress Shapes Health Policy, both with Thomas E. Mann; and Debt and Taxes: How America Got Into Its Budget Mess and What to Do About It, with John H. Makin.

Donald Green is the A. Whitney Griswold Professor of Political Science and Director of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University. His research concerns public opinion, voting behavior, campaign finance, hate crimes, and rationality. His most recent book is Get Out The Vote, which discusses how to raise the electoral turnout. His other publications include: "The Effects of Canvassing, Direct Mail and Telephone Contact on Voter Turnout: A Field Experiment", with A. Gerber, American Political Science Review, 2000, "Partisan Hearts and Minds" with B. Palmquist and E. Schickler, American Political Science Review, 1998. Green holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
