Judith Scott To Give Preiskel-Silverman Lecture Feb. 9—“Standing up for the Real Joe the Plumbers”


Judith Scott, General Counsel for the Service Employees International Union, Washington D.C., will deliver the 2008-2009 Preiskel-Silverman Lecture on Monday, February 9, 2009, at Yale Law School. Her talk is titled “Standing up for the Real Joe the Plumbers: Social Justice Lawyering in the Age of Obama” and is free and open to the public. It will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Room 127. A reception will follow in the Alumni Reading Room.

Scott has served since 1997 as General Counsel of the Service Employees International Union, which organizes among low-wage immigrant workers and is the largest healthcare union in the U.S.  She is also a member of the Washington, D.C. labor law firm of James & Hoffman.

She has practiced labor law for 35 years and has represented the United Mine Workers, Auto Workers Union, AFSCME, and Teamsters in key historic labor disputes and developments. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Partnership for Women and Families and the Alliance for Justice and has co-authored a handbook for union organizers, Organizing and the Law. She is the current co-chair of the ABA International Labor Law Committee.

She holds a B.A. from Wellesley College and a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.
