Summary and Analysis
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (which includes England & Wales) signed the CRC on April 19, 1990 and ratified it on December 16, 1991. The United Kingdom extended the CRC to its territories on September 7, 1994. The United Kingdom filed its initial report on January 14, 1994, followed by a number of supplemental reports on its territories. The second report was filed on September 14, 1999. The third report is not due until 2007.
The laws dealing with children's rights vary in the UK depending on the jurisdiction, since many jurisdictions in the UK have a significant degree of autonomy and self governance. The laws in England and Wales are very similar, and the laws of Northern Ireland and Scotland are slightly different. We were not able to research the law in all of the UK's many overseas territories, which may also have different laws on child protection due to loacl autonomy.
