Building A Better Legal Profession
Building a Better Legal Profession is a national grassroots organization founded by students at Stanford Law School in January 2007. The group collects and publicizes employment data at large private law firms as a way of encouraging workplace reform at these companies. By encouraging students to "vote with their feet" and select future employers based on quality-of-life criteria rather than the prestige of the firms, Building a Better Legal Profession creates market-based incentives for workplace reform.

Chambers and Partners
The Chambers Guides list the top lawyers and law firms in 175 countries. Select from Chambers USA, Chambers Europe, Chambers Global or Chambers UK. Each guide is searchable by firm name, individual attorney name, geographic location and practice area. Within each practice area, Chambers ranks firms by designating them as “Band 1 – 6,” with Band 1 ranking highest.

Flex Time Lawyers
In conjunction with Working Mother Magazine, Flex-Time Lawyers ranks the Top 50 Law Firms for Women.  These rankings and work/life balance articles are available from this site.

Heiros Gamos
Under Legal Directories, click on Law Firms to access information about law firms in the U.S. and abroad. Searchable by location and practice area.

IFLR 1000
The IFLR 1000 is an online directory of financial law firms in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Africa. Select a country and then a particular financial practice area to view descriptions of firms active in those areas.

Click "surveys and rankings" on the left sidebar to access American Lawyer Magazine rankings including the AmLaw 100, AmLaw 200, the A-List, the Midlevel & Summer Associate Surveys and much more. One in the selected article, scroll to the bottom of the page for related charts- registration (free) is required. Click "law jobs" to search job postings and read career articles.

Martindale Hubbell
Martindale-Hubbell is an extensive directory of law firms and corporate in-house counsel and is the primary means of learning about smaller law firms. Click advanced search and then search for law firms by name, location, practice area and/or firm size. Search for lawyers name, location, practice area and/or law school attended.

NALP Directory of Legal Employers
NALP's National Directory of Legal Employers, a directory of the larger law firms in the U.S., is searchable via this site. The directory is searchable by employer name, location, size, practice area and more. Each employer's individual listing contains additional details about the firm, including salary, number of anticipated hires and class years for which they plan to hire, contact information and a link to the employer's NALP Workplace Questionnaire, with information about benefits, alternative work options, pro bono and more. Yale students can use the mail merge feature by providing their Yale email address.

NewYorkLawyer.com
Contains information about New York's largest firms, including associate pay and layoffs, articles about the firms in New York Lawyer Magazine, and more general career advice.

Pro Bono Institute
Provides information about the Law Firm Pro Bono Project and Challenge. The Project assists law firms in developing effective law firm pro bono programs and the Challenge asks firms to agree to commit either three or five percent of the firm's total billable hours to pro bono work. The site contains a copy of the Challenge and a list of signatories with links to their websites.

Pro Bono Opportunities in New York
The New York State Bar Association website provides access to a listing of pro bono opportunities in, and outside of, New York City. Access these lists by clicking on For Attorneys, then Pro Bono, then Pro Bono Opportunities Guide.

Project for Attorney Retention
The PAR Project seeks to improve recruiting and retention of talented attorneys at D.C. law firms through the use of work schedules that allow attorneys to better balance the competing demands of their work and their lives outside the office. The website contains PAR's report on part-time, a chart detailing the part-time policies of many D.C. law firms, a list of work-life resources, tips for lawyers who work part-time and more.

Vault Online Career Library for YLS
For login information, click on the link on this website to have your 24-hour access password sent to your University email. This is for the sole use of Yale Law School students.

Yale Law School has purchased a subscription to the Vault Career Library, which enables students to download pdf versions of many of Vault's career guides, including the Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms which provides the “scoop” on each firm, tips on getting hired, quotes from survey respondents and information about quality of life factors. In addition to accessing the guides, click on "Industry Research" to view Vault's various rankings of firms by region, department, diversity and quality of life. Click on "Firm Research" to access law firm profiles which provide contact information and a firm snapshot. This site also provides access to message boards and career advice.
