Interview Programs

CDO sponsors and participates a variety of interview programs and career fairs for both public and private sector employment, including the Fall Interview Program, the Spring Interview Program, the Equal Justice Works Annual Conference and Career Fair in Washington, D.C., the Public Interest Legal Career Fair in New York, and the Overseas-Trained LL.M. Student Interview Program.

Fall Interview Program (FIP)
Every year, over 150 employers register for FIP to recruit second- and third-year students for summer and permanent positions. Typically 250 students interview with one or more employers during FIP. The majority of legal employers participating in FIP are larger law firms from larger cities that are able to predict their hiring needs nine months to one year ahead. However each year a number of public service organizations, smaller law firms, and employers in smaller cities also participate in FIP. Although FIP is the primary method for upperclass students to secure summer employment, it is by no means the only method. A CDO counselor can assist students in crafting a specific, targeted job search strategy.

Beginning in June students can view the employers registered for FIP, see their interview and hiring requirements, and upload application materials through the Career Management System (CMS).

Students interested in FIP should refer to the Fall Interview Program Guide, which provides helpful information about the logistics of FIP, including instructions and advice on selecting employers and interviewing. Visit the FIP Organization site on the YLS Inside Page for fast and easy access to all things FIP, including a list of employers registered to date, links to useful websites, articles of interest, CDO handouts and program videos on FIP-related topics, and a calendar of upcoming events and deadlines. CDO will host introductory sessions for students planning to participate in FIP. However, if at any time you wish to speak with a counselor please contact CDO at 203-432-1676 or email cdo.law@yale.edu.

CDO invites upperclass students to participate in FIP held August at the Omni Hotel in New Haven.

Spring Interview Program (SIP)
The Spring Interview Program is Yale Law School’s annual spring recruiting event for public interest and private sector employers to interview primarily 1Ls, but also 2Ls and 3Ls for summer and permanent positions. Each year 15-25 employers register to meet with students during SIP. Students are encouraged to meet with a CDO counselor to create a specific, targeted job search strategy to meet their needs.

In December, students will be able to view employers participating in SIP and their interview and hiring requirements. At that time, students can upload application materials through the Career Management System (CMS). In January, CDO hosts an introductory session for students planning to participate in SIP. However, if at any time you wish to speak with a counselor, please contact CDO at 203-432-1676 or email cdo.law@yale.edu.

CDO invites all students to participate in SIP held in early February at the Omni Hotel at in New Haven.

Equal Justice Works Annual Conference and Career Fair
YLS participates as a member-school in the annual Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair in Washington, D.C., which is a gathering of public interest and government employers from across the nation. Approximately 150 employers conduct prescheduled and informational interviews with law students from across the country. CDO subsidizes student travel and program fees to this event. The 2013 Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair will be held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26, 2013.

Public Interest Legal Career Fair
YLS co-sponsors the Public Interest Law Center at New York University School of Law providing students the opportunity to interview with employers for internships and permanent jobs, as well as to talk with employers at information tables. In past years, representatives from more than 200 organizations and over 2,300 law students have attended the Fair. CDO subsidizes student travel and program fees to this event. The 35th annual Public Interest Legal Career Fair will be held February 7 and 8, 2013.

Overseas-Trained LL.M. Student Interview Program
YLS, in cooperation with the law schools at Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and University of Virginia hosts an Annual Overseas-Trained LL.M. Student Interview Program. Employers from around the world are invited to come to the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in New York in late January to interview students from the seven law schools for foreign associates and/or six to eighteen month internship positions. In the early fall, CDO hosts an information session for LL.M. students interested in this program. However, if at any time you wish to speak with a counselor, please contact CDO at 203-432-1676 or cdo.law@yale.edu.
