Judicial Clerkships

YLS graduates have an excellent record of securing judicial clerkships at the state and federal level; a number have worked in courts outside the U.S. as well. CDO assists students and alumni seeking judicial clerkships in many ways, including a dedicated attorney counselor, three CDO guides on clerking,a host of additional online and print resources, along witha variety of programs during the year on exploring clerkship opportunities and navigating the application process. Finally, CDO works with law school staff to facilitate the bundling and delivery of clerkship application packets and recommendation letters.

Clerkship Application Resources
The following resources are useful to alumni and students in the process of applying for judicial clerkships:

Clerkships Organization
CDO has created aClerkships organization as part of the YLS Inside. It is the place for current applicants to check throughout the hiring season for updates on applications, answers to common questions, and information on interviewing and hiring.

Clerkship Comment Surveys
Each year, CDO requests information from alumni regarding their clerkships. Since 2006, these confidential comment surveys have been available to clerkship applicants online throughtheCareer Management System (CMS).Applicants can review surveys from theprevious seven years in CDO upon request.

Judges' Address Database
CDO maintains a database in the Career Management System (CMS) of current contact information which applicants can search and download as a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet can be used for cover letters and given to recommenders to use for their letters.

Note: Alumni who are applying for judicial clerkships this year should contact CDO at 203-432-1676 orcdo.law@yale.edu for access to the CMS clerkship module and Clerkships organization.

Mail Merge Templates
CDO has created Word templates for YLS applicants and their recommenders to use in creating mail-merged cover letters or recommendation letters. YLS faculty and staff access their templates and instructions via YLS Inside. Students and alumni applicants access their templates and instructions, as well as templates and instructions for nonYLS recommenders, viaCMS.
