Fitness & Recreation

Located just a five minute walk from the Law School, Payne Whitney Gymcontains training centers for crew, gymnastics, swimming, general exercise, recreational and varsity strength and conditioning,group fitness classes,and a state of the art fencing salon. Payne Whitney Gym is free to all Yale students, and memberships are available for purchase for student spouses. You can find membership and schedule information here.

Intramural Sports

Graduate-Professional Intramural Sports are managed by Payne Whitney Gym and are open to students, faculty and staff of the University. IM sports have four different seasons, and offer activities such asvolleyball, soccer, softball, basketball and ultimate frisbee. Meditation Sessions

YLS offers free meditation sessions every Wednesday at 12:10 pm. Most sessions are led bySue Neufeld, a Level 2 certified ParaYoga instructor. Meditation sessions are held in the Law School, and will resume for the Spring semester on January 22nd.

If you're interested in starting a meditation practice, we invite you to try the 40 Day Meditation Challenge (Yale NetID required).

Fitness Fridays

The Law School offers a special group fitness class for the YLS community at no cost on most Fridays. Classes are held in the Payne Whitney Gym E/F exercise room on the 5th floor from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, unless otherwise noted. No prior experience is required for any classes. The schedule for Spring 2014 can be found below.

Friday, January 24 - Cardio Kickboxing

This class uses martial arts-based kickboxing techniques to increase muscular strength, cardiovascular conditioning, coordination, and balance.

Friday, January 31 - Yoga Fusion with Ellen Barrett

We are excited to offer a special class with acclaimed fitness professional Ellen Barrett this semester. Yoga Fusion seamlessly blends vinyasa yoga, standing Pilates and ballet conditioning for a zen-ful 60 minute total body workout. Invigorating movements, combined with a thoughtful mind/body connection, make Yoga Fusion ideal for all fitness levels.

Friday, February 7 - Strength Training

This class uses free weights to help define, shape, and tone your body.

Friday, February 14 - Core & More

This 40-minute class will focus on specific exercises that develop functional abdominal strength. The class will incorporate strength, stabilizing, and balancing exercises, along with cardio bursts to increase the heart rate.

Friday, February 28 -Salsa Dance with Alisa's House of Salsa

Join us for a beginner's salsa class with Alisa from Alisa's House of Salsa. No partner is necessary, and recommended footwear includes ballroom shoes, sneakers, pumps, high heels, or dress shoes

Friday, March 7 - Places of Beauty Walk with Professor Jean Koh Peters - 12:00 - 1:00 pm

Professor Peters will lead us in a walk around the Yale campus, focusing on some of the hidden places of beauty right in our own backyard. This is a great low-impact way to enjoy the start of spring! Please note that this walk begins promptly at 12:00 pm, and will meet at Prof. Peters' office (Room 170) rather than Payne Whitney Gym.

Friday, March 14 - Boot Camp

High-intensity cardio intervals and strength training are combined for a total body workout. Modifications will be available for all exercises to increase or decrease intensity as needed.

Friday, March 28 - T'ai-Chi/Qigong with Bill Banick

Bill Banick of BigFaceLove Yoga will lead a combined T'ai-Chi/Qigong class, flowing from one practice into the other. The class itself is structured to warm-up and stretch, then practice stances which leads to walking and then into form. All you need is comfortable clothes and openness to becoming more relaxed and balanced.

Friday, April 4 - Step Aerobics

A high energy workout incorporating creative choreography on a step platform to keep your mind busy while your body is working.
