Lethal Sonar: Submarines, Sonar, and the Death of Whales
In 2008, the Supreme Court reversed a district court injunction that
limited the use of sonar in anti-submarine warfare military exercises
off the coast of California. The case was brought as part of a
decade-long fight to protect whales. The navy’s use of sonar has been
blamed for numerous deaths: necropsies of the washed up whales showed
hemorrhaging in and around the ears and internal organs. Joel
Reynolds, senior attorney and head of NRDC’s Marine Mammal Protection
Program, will give a brief history of the legal battle and continuing
efforts to protect whales.
