Survey Methodology

YLW surveyed firms listed in the 2012 Vault Law 100. All data collected reflect statistics from the 2011 calendar year.

Survey questions fell into several broad categories:

  • Scheduling and Hours
    • Part-Time and Flex-Time Policies (including Compensation)
    • Billable Hours
  • Career Development
    • Partner Promotions
    • Leadership Committees
  • Leave Policies and Alternative Career Programs
    • Childcare and Leave Policies
    • Sick Days and Vacation Days
    • Extended Leave Opportunities
  • Other
    • Benefits
    • Innovative Practices

Beyond written policies, survey questions queried actual implementation of family-friendly practices. These questions focused on if/when these policies were actually used; who benefited from these policies (e.g., gender equity in partner promotions); and how these policies were used (e.g., how many part-time hours are worked, when attorneys avail themselves of part-time). Firm responses were weighted based on a concurrent survey that asked Yale Law School alumni currently working at the Vault 100 firms to rank each category of family friendly policies and practices by importance. The reported statistics are based on the aggregate responses received from all firms responding to the survey. Responses from individual firms are kept strictly confidential.
