Herbert Burkert has been teaching at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, and has been a Guest Professor at the Harvard Law School. He is a member of the Governing Board of the Research Center for Information Law, University of St.Gallen, Switzerland.

He is the Executive Member of the Board of the Candida Höfer-Foundation, a Contemporary Art Foundation in Cologne, Germany. His fields of interest are the relationship between Information and Law, the role of technology in Contemporary Art, and Far Eastern History of the 19th and 20th century.

He lives – mostly - in Cologne, Germany.
