Seth C. Lewis is the Shirley Papé Chair in Emerging Media in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon.

I work at the intersection of digital technologies, media sociology, and journalism studies (see my papers via Google Scholar). My research explores the social implications of emerging technologies, with emphasis on the digital transformation of journalism — from how news is made (news production) to how people make sense of it in their everyday lives (news consumption).

My current work focuses on three areas: (1) trust in institutions and perceptions of media bias, as explored through interview-based studies, such as a comparative analysis of the journalism and medical professions; (2) the role of AI in media and public life, with studies of human–machine communication and analyses of responses to tools such as ChatGPT; and (3) the changing shape of the press in society, with a focus on issues such as harassment against journalists and the destabilization of journalism in contemporary media culture (see our recent book News After Trump: Journalism’s Crisis of Relevance in a Changed Media Culture).
