October 19-21
More than 900 YLS alums and their guests returned to the Law School for Alumni Weekend 2012 on October 19-21st to reconnect with classmates and other Law School friends, and to enjoy the varied panel discussions, class events, and festive meals. It all began on Friday afternoon with the Inaugural Gruber Distinguished Lecture in Women’s Rights, starting with a fascinating panel discussion exploring “Equality’s Frontiers,” followed by a conversation between Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Linda Greenhouse ’78 M.S.L., held at Battell Chapel. Friday night’s All-Alumni Reception and Dinner took place in Commons, the University’s marvelous dining hall festooned with Yale banners. After dinner, alumni and their guests remained in Commons, catching up with YLS friends well into the evening over coffee, wine, and a medley of desserts.
Saturday morning began with a Fun Run with Professor Ian Ayres ’86 and a dozen alumni and students. Incredibly enough, more than 100 students and alumni, paired after completing surveys about their career interests, met together over breakfast, while other alumni and their guests enjoyed breakfast in the Law School dining hall. The theme for the Weekend, "Entertainment and the Law," allowed for lively Saturday morning panel discussions on topics related to the theme, including the promises and pitfalls of social networks, ownership of cultural capital, hot topics in sports law, and new ways to get entertainment.
At the All-Alumni Luncheon on Saturday, the Yale Law School Association's Award of Merit was presented to David Boies II ’66, Chairman, Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP. David gave eloquent remarks about how much work remains to achieve America’s “promise of equality,” particularly with respect to gender equality, and how we as lawyers should make justice more efficient so there will no longer be a need to ask how much justice someone can afford.
Following the presentation of the Award of Merit, two faculty members remembered two giants of the legal profession that the YLS Community lost this past year. The Honorable Louis H. Pollak ’48 was eulogized by Anthony T. Kronman ’75, Sterling Professor of Law, and Nicholas deB. Katzenbach ’47 was remembered by Reva Siegel ’86, Nicholas deB. Katzenbach Professor of Law and Professor of American Studies.
The All-Alumni Luncheon concluded with a joyous celebration of our beloved Guido’s 80th birthday with song, a video, and, of course, birthday cake.
Throughout the weekend individual classes had special activities ranging from a 50th Class of 1962 champagne reception to the Class of 1972’s “Next Chapter” session; a wine and cheese gathering for the Class of 1967; a courtyard gathering of the Classes of 1992, 2002, and 2007; and a Class of 1952-sponsored talk by Professor Heather Gerken on “Countdown to Election 2012: A Last Minute Assessment,” followed by a private discussion between the Class and Professor Gerken over tea and cookies.
On Saturday night and Sunday morning, reunion classes--those in classes ending in 2’s and 7’s--met together for their festive class reunion dinners and brunches. Notably, a special reunion dinner was held for the Class of 1949, joined by one member of the Class of 1947 and her guest.
