Blake E.B. Emerson

Blake Emerson is a Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School and a Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law. His areas of focus span administrative law, structural constitutional law, tort law, and political theory. Emerson previously served as Special Counsel and Research Fellow at the Administrative Conference of the United States, where he co-authored two reports on federal agency best practices. Emerson’s book The Public’s Law: Origins and Architecture of Progressive Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2019) gives a historical and theoretical account of democracy in the U.S. administrative state. His scholarly work has appeared in the Yale Law Journal, Jurisprudence, and The Cambridge Handbook of Constitutional Theory, among other publications. Emerson’s 2021 article in the Yale Journal on Regulation, “The Departmental Structure of Executive Power: Subordinate Checks from Madison to Mueller,” won the Association of American Law Schools, Administrative Law Section’s Emerging Scholar Award. After receiving a B.A. from Williams College, Emerson earned an M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale University. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, where his work was recognized with a number of awards.
